What is Gala Games? Just another play-to-earn crypto gaming platform? Gala Games is a platform that builds a range of blockchain-powered games, each of which provides players with true ownership of their in-game items through the use of non-fungible tokens (NFTs). The platform has been developed by a team of 60 and has more than 1.3 million active users worldwide.
Gala Games was founded in 2019 by Eric Schiermeyer the founder of Zynga Games and a legend in the gaming industry, Wright Thurston one of the first major cryptocurrency miners, and Michael McCarthy as Creative Director who’s previous success includes the viral gaming hit Farmville 2. This is a top drawer leadership.
Focusing on fun first gaming and utilizing blockchain technology Gala Games is building the next generation of online gaming with their platform. At current, there are only two games in beta mode, Town Star, and Spider Tanks. In the future, they will release a game based upon the Walking Dead tv show, a fantasy RPG game Mirandus, and a sci-fi-based game Echoes of Empire and more is coming down the road. They want these games to be fun to play, something that is kinda missing in early versions of online blockchain games where the focus was tokenomics only.
Gala Games recently announced a partnership with C2 Ventures to build a $100 million game development fund. This money will make investments into new games for the platform. They announced a deal with Will Wright who was the creator of The Sims.
The GALA token is the fuel that runs the Gala Games network. Using GALA, a person can buy items from within the Gala Games ecosystem, purchase card packs from other Alliance-members such as Splinterlands, and activate Founder’s Nodes on the Gala Games network. The supply is limited to 50 billion tokens. The GALA token itself was an ERC-20 token that will enable players to create, play, own, and trade within the GALA gaming platform.
GALA is also tradable on the Binance Smart Chain.
You can own your game assets
Gala Games allows players to own their game assets. Each game asset is an NFT game piece that can be purchased and used within its respective game for play or trade for other assets.
Part of why Gala now has 1.3 million users is that the team has made it easy for users to buy-sell assets(NFT’s) in the ecosystem. Players can switch from Town Star Spider Tanks with not much effort or confusion. With a couple of games out now and more coming this is a good selling point.
Each piece, no matter which game will have six rarity characteristics. Common, Uncommon, Rare, Epic, Legendary, and Ancient. These characteristics combine to make each NFT — the game piece, in this case — valuable or just common. Many games employ the same type of uniqueness in the platform. Wizards of the Coast is one game that has been using a similar feature for their card trading game for years.
The Nodes
What is a Gala node anyways? Gala Nodes help to secure the Gala Games network. As a node operator, you will receive points in “Daily Distribution,” which are NFTs, game items, and GALA coins which will be added to your treasure chest. You are rewarded for running a node with these items. Running a node is how the ecosystem is allowed to operate and remain decentralized.
A node is simply a computer with specialized software on it that allows the network to run. The same is true for any blockchain ecosystem. The terms are sometimes different, for example, in Ethereum node operators are titled, miners. Miners are those who support the network by running a node for transactions to be run through.
At the time of this writing a node, or Founder’s Node will cost you 186,468.838 GALA tokens to get started. That is about $23,000 USD. Gala says they have the world’s largest independent node network. Not sure what that means. I think Ethereum would have more nodes.
Transactions in the GALAverse are made in GALA tokens. The price for a node can be converted into USD or ETH for comparison purposes, but all NFT and nodes are priced in GALA tokens.
As a node operator and game player, you can participate in voting for new functions or games and so forth in the GALAverse. Like this proposal.
The Vox
The really big event in the Galaverse was on December 6th when Vox became available for minting. The Vox is game NFT pieces that can be simply collected and traded as tokens are. They are used as game pieces that enhance the characteristics of your NFT game piece. It is an add-on feature for Gala games.
Only 8888 were minted or ever will be minted. Their utility is across the Galaverse as it stands now. They can be used in Town Star by completing a daily task and earning rewards. And you will be able, down the road, to play with your Vox in their own Vox game.
The Environment
Gala Games has partnered with One Tree Planted to aid in restoring our natural wilderness. For every purchase on the Gala Games site, $1 is donated to help plant trees. There is a lot of talk around cryptocurrency and energy use which is a complicated issue. Gala Games is doing something to lessen the environmental impact of their blockchain on the world. It is a good move.
